Who We Are
Walker Wilcox Matousek LLP opened its doors in 2005 with 8 founding partners from a Chicago-based Am-Law 200 firm. The firm has grown steadily since then to nearly 40 lawyers in Chicago and Houston. Our client relationships have endured for many years, in some cases decades, a testament to our commitment to our clients’ needs and their business objectives.
What We Do
Our firm’s core strength is handling complex insurance and reinsurance matters on behalf of a sophisticated client base from the world’s leading insurance markets in the U.S., London, Bermuda and Europe. We provide a wide variety of services, including coverage analysis, claims handling counseling, arbitration and mediation, litigation, trials and appeals. We have a deep bench of attorneys experienced not only in litigation but also at trials and appeals, appearing in state and federal courts around the country; 25 of our attorneys have briefed and argued appeals in state and federal courts of appeal.
WWM is known domestically and abroad for the depth and scope of its experience in many insurance and reinsurance fields, including bad faith, directors and officers, errors and omissions, financial institutions, first party property, insurance bankruptcy, professional liability and reinsurance. We strive to help our clients respond to emerging issues in their fields, including recently developing areas such as cyber and privacy, LIBOR, concussion litigation and fracking.
Additionally, we provide commercial, litigation, general corporate, employment and real estate services. Our lawyers have handled such areas as personal injury and product liability defense, construction litigation, toxic tort disputes, transportation litigation, nursing home law, admiralty matters and defamation. Our lawyers have diverse backgrounds that permit a unique understanding of our clients’ businesses: two lawyers have their MBAs; another has a CPCU; two lawyers are former underwriters; two of our partners practiced engineering before attending law school.
Where We Practice
Centrally located in Chicago and Houston, WWM is positioned to handle cases efficiently across the country. We have represented our clients’ interests in virtually every state including 7 state supreme courts and 8 of the 12 federal district courts. WWM recently moved its Chicago office to One North Franklin Street where it acquired 35,000 square feet over two floors. WWM designed its new offices from the walls out, creating a bright and open space that encourages collaboration and collegiality, including a fireplace and glass offices fronts that allows natural light to flow throughout the space.
In 2008, WWM opened an office in Houston, Texas to grow its insurance bankruptcy practice and to respond to our clients’ needs for coverage and litigation counsel in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Ike.
Our Houston office moved into newly designed space that adopts the same open and bright atmosphere of the Chicago space, with the added feature of an outdoor deck to enjoy the snow-free Houston weather.
How We Serve
WWM recognizes the importance of providing training, skill and resources to charitable, community and educational organizations throughout our communities. For just a few examples, WWM serves as Panel Counsel for the National Immigrant Justice Center where we provide legal counsel to refugees seeking asylum and U-Visas in the U.S. We participate regularly in the YMCA Community School Program “Produce Day” with the Greater Chicago Food Depository. WWM supports the Chicago Volunteer Legal Services and also sponsors the CVLS’ annual “Race Judicata.” We are integral to the “No Bats Baseball” club’s fundraising to provide service dogs to disabled war veterans. Earlier this year, our Houston office participated in the 20th Great Grown-Up Spelling Bee, an event that raised more than $130,000 for the Houston Center for Literacy. We placed 3rd, caught by the word “sacerdotal.”
Walker Wilcox Matousek is committed to a diverse workplace that reflects the community in which we live and work. For us, diversity encompasses race, religion, national origin, gender, age, disability, sexual orientation and innumerable other factors that make up who we are as well as the community in which we live. We firmly believe that a diverse workplace makes us a better law firm. Diversity enables us to bring a broader perspective to the problems our clients face, leads to a higher quality of work, and enriches our work atmosphere. It is therefore the firm’s goal to foster a firm-wide culture that promotes diversity, so that all members of our team are valued.
